Roshamon essays In the movie Roshamon, point of view is the predominant technique used to tell the story. What actually happens to the characters is overshadowed by the way they see themselves during the story. "There are four basic types of point of view: the first person, the omniscient, the third person, and the objective. In first person, the narrator tells his or her won story. They can either be an objective or subjective observer. An objective narrator can be relied on to relate the events accurately, but a subjective observer can't be totally relied on to tell the truth."" (Giannetti, 401) In Roshamon, the first person point of view is used but in the subjective sense. We as viewers got to see how each character portrayed themselves during the movie through their point of view. The point of view tells more about the person telling the story then the actual story. What they say reflects how they see themselves, or how they need to see themselves. For example, the bandit needs to see himself as brave and fearless. He cares more about his ego than his life. The bandit was so concerned with the fact that someone accused him of falling off his horse that he confessed to murdering the man in the woods. The bandit couldn't bear to have anyone think of him as weak. When the woman tells her version of the story, she portrays herself as being the selfless woman who would rather die than have her husband think poorly of her. She claimed to have tried to kill herself twice When the medium tells the man's story through the priest, the man has to preserve his self-image by lying to himself. He claimed his wife was so evil and he should be pitied because he was married to her. The man, in turn, kills himself just so he does not look weak because of The woodcutter's story is very absurd. Its true that they all have to do with negation, but thats where the similarity ends. To deny a statement is simply that. The Obama administration estimated that it could raise nearly $14 billion by repealing tax credit (Zengerle). In a protest, the American Petroleum Institute would launch new print and radio ads to â€Å"educate the consumers† (Snow). All these developments have spurred a nation-wide verbal war. But reality demands some incentives for the green energy industry in terms of reduced competition. The arguments in favor of â€Å"Green Energy† are clearly apprehensible on the medium to long term basis. The world’s primary demand for energy is expected to increase by one third by the year 2035. As the time goes on, the price mechanism of the energy market will be more focused on the development in the emerging economies. This will put the developed economies in an uncomfortable position as demand cut back on their behalf won’t have much effect on the prices of the energy. Today the US consumes nearly half of the total oil produced, but by 2035, nearly 30% of the consumption will shift to Asia backed by heavy use of automobiles. Also there is a â€Å"Peak oil† situation already in process. By 2020, the oil production from the Middle East and North Africa is expected to decline by 6 million barrel per day. Hence, for a long term policy formulation, preference should be given to the green energy sector. Another long-term concern is global warming. The development and operation of green energy power systems are still in their growing phase. The focus of innovation is still centered on energy efficiency. One of the most talked about argument is that rising taxes will not make the gasoline cheap; rather, it may push the price higher. The Debt-for-Nature Swap In recent decades, the issue of biodiversity loss in developing nations has captured the attention of many environmental groups in the global North. Since the vast majority of the Earth's plant and animal life lies within the borders of developing nations, efforts to protect global biodiversity through the promotion of environmental conservation have largely been focused in the global South. Because of this regional focus, financial mechanisms have been seen as an effective way for groups in the industrialized North to promote their environmental interests in the developing world. Debt-for-nature swaps, which became popular in the early 1990's, are one such mechanism in which an indebted developing nation agrees to invest in conservation projects or environmentally friendly actions in exchange for the cancellation of a portion of its foreign debt by a creditor. (Patterson, 4) "The location of much of the world's most diverse biota often forces agreements to trade-off conservation and conventional development goals." (Moran, 63) Debt-for-nature swaps take this into account and attempt to balance out the economic costs that an LDC (less developed nation) incurs when investing in environmental conservation. Aristotle (384 BC to 322 BC) was the first to write about marine life, recording his observations made on or near the Island of Lesbos in Ancient Greece.
