Teenage Girls and Media Essay - 576 Words

Teenage girls receive around 40 hours of media exposure every week. This is the most time that teens spend on an activity other than school and sleeping. Teenage girls are highly influenced by the ideal body image that they see on screen. When girls fail to do so, they can become depressed and have a lower self-esteem. However, most of the bodies of models and celebrities are difficult for the average person to attain. Also, the girls in video games are often seen as weaker than the men and not as intelligent. They are the damsel in distress that needs to be saved by the men. The CAPM formula is as follows: Cost of Equity = Risk-Free Rate + Beta * (Market Rate of Return - Risk-Free Rate) The beta of the stock refers to change in the return on stock with respect to change in market. A beta value of 1 indicates the stock moves in tandem with the market. Form In Art Essay Example For Students

Form In Art Essay The object in question is marked as a Syrian, Bronze Age, stone label seal c. 3rd- 2nd millennium. Most of the seals I have viewed have much more representational forms on them than this object has. I have not been able to find any books which have pictures of items with this name, which leads me to believe that it has been marked wrong. The object resembles a small, oval shaped bead with indentations in the centers of the longer sides, making it look like the number 8. Both sides have the same, simple decoration of carved lines;if the object is viewed with the hole through its middle going up to down rather than left to right two vertical lines in the center and four horizontal lines on either side of these. One side of the object is flat, but the other side is convex. After viewing many pictures of seals and cylinder seals, I find it unusual that this object should be marked as a seal because the design of its decoration is so simple. It seems more likely that this object is what one definition calls a token or a small, stone or clay bead worn on a string about the neck. Each token was a different size or shape and stood for different business transactions. An impression would be made in clay or wax signifying that the transaction took place. 1. These tokens were often only a shape that could be recognized as being different from other individuals token shapes, like a persons signature. The indentations and line decoration on the token make it resemble a pair of wings. The shape of the tokens flat side and rounded side are like a human chest cavity. This could be a combination of human skeleton and spirituality wings. There are many depictions of winged gods and goddesses in ancient Near Eastern art. Though this object is highly utilitarian and has little representational decoration, it seems likely that there would be a connection between its wing-like shape and the frequency of wings in other Syrian art. The shape of wings being repeated on a token used for business transactions seems to signify that the concept of wings is important culturally. This implies that the Syrian culture fused their religious beliefs with other aspects of their lives. One example of a similar shape used in a religious sculpture is of a North Syrian goddess with a birds face from the 2nd millennium BC. The chest cavity and wings of this goddess sculpture have a very similar shape to the token. The lines on the wings of the sculpture radiate down to the edges of the wings like the horizontal lines on the token. The indented-oval shape is also repeated here. Shaping a tool tool, meaning: the object in its metonymical sense, to look like a pair of wings, makes the object metaphorical. The object was made with simple decorations to only imply the shape of wings because it was a tool which identified a person or business with a quickly recognizable icon. This is much like a company logo would be today, though the significance of wings was probably used here because of its spiritual implications. One winged Near Eastern goddess, Inanna, was thought to be the bringer of bounty and fertility 2. In this case, using wings for a business tool may be thought to bring plentiful success to the user of the tool. Another example of wings being depicted in Syrian art is on a cylinder seal with a winged sun disk and lion attacking animals 1500-1300 BC. This example has more in common with the token metaphorically On this seal the winged sun represents male power; the strength of the lion defeating the other animals. The difference here is in the figure in the center of the wings. On the token, there are only two vertical lines between the wing shapes; a figurative blank space. There is no actual body represented on the token, only the two lines, as if they are the space where a body could be. .u062f475e0c05745518a85c2931574779 , .u062f475e0c05745518a85c2931574779 .postImageUrl , .u062f475e0c05745518a85c2931574779 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u062f475e0c05745518a85c2931574779 , .u062f475e0c05745518a85c2931574779:hover , .u062f475e0c05745518a85c2931574779:visited , .u062f475e0c05745518a85c2931574779:active { border:0!important; } .u062f475e0c05745518a85c2931574779 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u062f475e0c05745518a85c2931574779 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u062f475e0c05745518a85c2931574779:active , .u062f475e0c05745518a85c2931574779:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u062f475e0c05745518a85c2931574779 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u062f475e0c05745518a85c2931574779 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u062f475e0c05745518a85c2931574779 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u062f475e0c05745518a85c2931574779 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u062f475e0c05745518a85c2931574779:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u062f475e0c05745518a85c2931574779 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u062f475e0c05745518a85c2931574779 .u062f475e0c05745518a85c2931574779-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u062f475e0c05745518a85c2931574779:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Digital Art In Film EssayAny winged creature could be placed between the lines on the token. The space between those two lines makes the tool have a shifting metaphorical value. It is like a space to be filled whichever deity can best help with the business at hand. The lines could also imply that the user himself is winged, powerful like a god. The user of the tool can place himself between the lines. The minimal decoration on this object is so unlike much of the art I have viewed from the Syrian culture during this time period. Though the object is metonymical as a tool, its design and shape are highly metaphorical in their simplicity.

The Tempest Act 1 Scene 1 free essay sample

It is clear that Shakespeare was eager to set the scene and plant the audience in the world of the play with the opening word â€Å"Boatswain†. This first word immediately transports the audience on to the deck of the ship, ready for adventure. With the master’s second remark the audience finds itself in the eye of the storm. â€Å"We run ourselves aground†. The effect of these words on the audience, together with the rushing around on the deck of the ship, is to make them panic, as they begin to realise there is trouble ahead. The sense of danger is further enhanced by the Master’s and Boatswain’s use of plosive alliteration. â€Å"Bestir, bestir† and â€Å"Blow till thou burst! †. There is an instant anxiety between both men’s attempts to remain calm and the emotional effect of the alliteration. This highlights to the audience the urgency of the situation, but also shows them that the Boatswain is not really scared by the circumstances. We will write a custom essay sample on The Tempest Act 1 Scene 1 or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page It is clear that the Boatswain is no stranger to violent storms by the quote â€Å"Cheerly, cheerly†. Shakespeare’s use of this alliteration shows that the Boatswain is confident with the storm and feels in control. He gives orders to the noblemen travelling on his ship to â€Å"keep below† and this illustrates to the audience that he feels it is safer and easier for him to control the ship if the passengers are not in the way. This gives the audience a sense of relief and calms them, as they feel he is a capable sailor who can manage the ship successfully. Alonso’s high status will be marked by his regal costume. This gives tension to the play, because during Shakespeare’s lifetime, royalty were considered far more important than the ordinary person. Therefore, if the King was to drown it would be considered to be far more tragic than if it was an common person. The audience will be initially shocked to hear the Boatswain utter the words â€Å"What cares these roarers for the name of King†. He is a character of lowly status and yet he is showing no consideration for the King’s hierarchy and even challenges his authority. When the audience first meets Alonso, he voices displeasure at the Boatswain as is illustrated by â€Å"Good Boatswain, have care. Where is the Master? † The audience get the impression that Alonso is undermining the Boatswain, who they have already perceived as a capable character, and they may find Alonso’s words insulting. This portrays the King in a negative way. The Boatswain repeatedly tells the passengers to return to the hold because their being on deck will endanger the ship. This is shown by the quote â€Å"I pray now keep below†. Despite Alonso’s rudeness to the Boatswain, his response is extremely controlled. At this point the audience can see the chain of hierarchy reversed and they witness a lowly boatswain being authoritative and taking charge of everyone, including the nobles on the ship. When Gonzalo reminds the Boatswain â€Å"Remember whom thou hast aboard†, the Boatswain replies â€Å"none that I love more than myself†. The Boatswain is making the point that in the eye of the storm, and symbolically before G-d, all men are equal. This principle reverses the idea of the medieval chain of being. As mentioned earlier, during Shakespearian times, on land the King rules and governs and is the most important person. However, on a ship this is not the case. No one on the ship has power and everyone is seen as equals. This reversal of the medieval chain can be seen again when Prospero assumes authority on the island, where he rules with ruthless passion. The question of divine right is questioned as Propero has taken the island from Caliban, whose mother used to rule it, and therefore, should now have been governed by Caliban. Prospero’s cruelty and dictatorship over the inhabitants of the island are prepared for by Sebastian’s and Antonio’s angry abuse of the Boatswain:†you bawling, blasphemous, incharitable dog! , and â€Å"hang, you whoreson, insolent noisemaker. † The audience witness this very abusive behaviour towards the Boatswain. Both men use caustic and pejorative language that would appear to the audience to be unjust. The Boatswain is after all, only doing his job and trying to save the ship and the people on board. However, Sebastian and Antonio see it as their right to speak to the lowly shipman in this manner. They see him s inferior to them. Antonio’s last cry â€Å"Let’s all sink with the King† is an example of dramatic irony in which the audience hears a subtle joke by Shakespeare at the expense of King James. It prepares the audience for the fact that there will be a play that examines the rights and wrongs of empire. At the time of the play the country has just been taken over by James who is a catholic. England, as a protestant country, is insecure at having a catholic ruler. James is not trusted by the English and isn’t a secure monarch. Act 1 scene 1 definitely catches the attention of the audience through a strong use of colonialism, stage direction and costume. It will have them on the edge of their seats, anticipating what is going to happen next.

Roshamon essays

Roshamon essays In the movie Roshamon, point of view is the predominant technique used to tell the story. What actually happens to the characters is overshadowed by the way they see themselves during the story. "There are four basic types of point of view: the first person, the omniscient, the third person, and the objective. In first person, the narrator tells his or her won story. They can either be an objective or subjective observer. An objective narrator can be relied on to relate the events accurately, but a subjective observer can't be totally relied on to tell the truth."" (Giannetti, 401) In Roshamon, the first person point of view is used but in the subjective sense. We as viewers got to see how each character portrayed themselves during the movie through their point of view. The point of view tells more about the person telling the story then the actual story. What they say reflects how they see themselves, or how they need to see themselves. For example, the bandit needs to see himself as brave and fearless. He cares more about his ego than his life. The bandit was so concerned with the fact that someone accused him of falling off his horse that he confessed to murdering the man in the woods. The bandit couldn't bear to have anyone think of him as weak. When the woman tells her version of the story, she portrays herself as being the selfless woman who would rather die than have her husband think poorly of her. She claimed to have tried to kill herself twice When the medium tells the man's story through the priest, the man has to preserve his self-image by lying to himself. He claimed his wife was so evil and he should be pitied because he was married to her. The man, in turn, kills himself just so he does not look weak because of The woodcutter's story is very absurd. He covers up for himself ...
